Canadian Cattle Association focused on CUSMA review as trade talks with U.S. continue

As commerce talks with the U.S. proceed, the Canadian Cattle Affiliation says it’s happy to see a deal with the upcoming review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico commerce settlement (CUSMA) whereas tariff-free entry for CUSMA-compliant items is maintained.

“That is vitally necessary to cattle and beef producers,” stated affiliation president Tyler Fulton in an Aug. 5 assertion.

“The North American beef trade is extremely built-in,” he stated. “CUSMA has performed a key position in permitting beef producers from the U.S. and Canada to reap the advantages flowing from the economies created by that integration.”

Klassen: Feeder market in price discovery mode

For the week ending August 2, Western Canadian feeder cattle markets traded steady to as much as $10 higher. Quality yearling packages off grass were up as much as $15 in some cases. Prices for similar weight cattle were quite variable across the Prairies, which made the market hard to define. The market appears to be in price discovery mode for the grass yearling market.

Most agricultural items, together with beef, are exempt from current 35 per cent tariffs underneath CUSMA.

The Canadian Cattle Affiliation will host the North American Beef Cattle Leaders’ trilateral meeting in September. The trilateral assembly brings collectively nationwide cattle producer organizations from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

The group will talk about animal well being, the competativeness of the North American beef sector and commerce, Fulton stated.

“CCA will proceed to work with the Authorities of Canada, provincial members, and have interaction with stakeholders on each side of the border to advocate for constructive outcomes for the North American beef sector in preparation for the 2026 CUSMA assessment,” he added.
